TY - CHAP TI - Ecofriendly Synthesis of Biopolymer Nanocomposites and Its Application as a Potent Marine Antifouling Agent AU - Kavitha, G. AU - Inbakanadan, D. T2 - Environmental Biotechnology Vol. 1 A2 - Gothandam, K. M. A2 - Ranjan, Shivendu A2 - Dasgupta, Nandita A2 - Lichtfouse, Eric T3 - Environmental Chemistry for a Sustainable World AB - The undesirable colonization of anthropogenic surfaces by organisms in the marine environment is stated as marine biofouling. The biofouling of marine systems is a global concern, with economic impact estimated at billions of dollars. The widely used antifouling biocides including tributyltin tin (TBT) have been previously assimilated into marine paints. Although it has remarkable antifouling performance, it is toxic to the marine environment. Therefore, it is essential to develop ecofriendly antifouling compounds. In the recent times, the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of nanomaterials have considerably improved the potential applications ranging from environment and energy to healthcare compared with those of bulk materials. Marine antifouling coating is the most effective way for avoiding marine organism attachment till date. However, the cost associated with the commercial antifouling agents and their maintenance is quite high. Therefore, it is indispensable to develop ecofriendly antifouling compounds. This chapter discusses ecofriendly method to produce biopolymer and nanomaterials conglomerating the antimicrobial property of nanoparticles and the unique structure of the biopolymer PHB against marine biofouling.
